The Words We Speak
Do any of these statements sound familiar?
- I am going to eat less and lose weight.
- I am going to exercise.
- I am going to quit my bad habits.
- I am going to work harder.
- I am going to become rich and famous!
- I am going to pray more.
- I am going to read my Bible every day.
The list of things we are going to do or going to become can be endless.
There are many things we want to accomplish because we want to become better people and, perhaps, even look better. Maybe we want to become more popular, gain more friends, or earn more money so we can buy the things we need—or simply the things we want.
We often make these kinds of statements—strong declarations about what we hope will happen in our lives, especially as a new year begins. Am I right?
But saying something and making sure it happens are two very different things. Achieving our goals requires effort, perseverance, discipline, and dedication. Even then, the things we desire may not always come to pass.
As I look at my own life, I see many areas where I want to grow and become better. Yet trying to improve everything at once can be exhausting. It can drain both my strength and my motivation.
So I have learned to do my best—and let God do the rest.
How about you? Are you a person of your word? Do you usually follow through on the things you say you are going to do?
I know Someone who always does.
Our Almighty God.
In Psalm 33:4–5 we read:
"For the word of the Lord is right and true; He is faithful in all He does. The Lord loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of His unfailing love."
Unlike us, God never fails to keep His promises. His words are always true because His character is true. As Numbers 23:19 reminds us:
"God is not human, that He should lie... Does He speak and then not act? Does He promise and not fulfill?"
Yet many people still doubt Him or even deny His existence, even though creation itself points to its Creator. Some even accuse God of being uncaring or powerless. They look at wars, murder, injustice, natural disasters, and suffering and conclude that God has failed.
Have you ever blamed God for something painful that happened in your life?
I have.
There were seasons when I could not feel His presence, and I questioned Him. Looking back, I am so thankful for His patience and mercy. Time after time, He gave me another opportunity to learn, to grow, and to return to Him. I believe He does the same for everyone who humbly repents and seeks Him.
Our own words matter more than we often realize.
We must be careful with what we say, because our words reveal what is in our hearts and often shape the direction of our lives.
Proverbs 18:21 says:
"Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit."
Our words can encourage or discourage, heal or wound, build up or tear down—not only others, but ourselves as well.
But what about God's words?
Psalm 33:6–9 tells us:
"By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, their starry host by the breath of His mouth... For He spoke, and it came to be; He commanded, and it stood firm."
What an incredible testimony to God's greatness!
That is one of the greatest differences between us and God.
When we speak, we express our hopes, dreams, plans, and desires.
When God speaks, He creates reality.
His word has unlimited power.
The wonderful news is that when we believe His promises, stand on His Word, and align our lives with His will, we can confidently trust that He will accomplish what He has promised in His perfect time.
As Isaiah 55:11 says:
"So is My word that goes out from My mouth: It will not return to Me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it."
Jesus also said:
"The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit and life." (John 6:63)
And the writer of Hebrews reminds us:
"For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any double-edged sword." (Hebrews 4:12)
God's Word is not merely ink on paper. It is alive. It changes hearts, renews minds, strengthens the weary, gives hope to the hopeless, and leads people into eternal life.
So today, let us choose our words carefully.
Even more importantly, let us choose to believe, speak, and live by God's Word.
Because while our words may express our desires, God's Word has the power to transform lives.
What will you choose today—your own words, or God's Word?

ReplyDeletePerhaps, the best thing to do is by acting on one's plan without the need to publicly declare it. Doing so, creates less pressure on oneself. Sometimes, it is better to work on things for the better in a silent way than let the whole world know it. :)
